Part 1: The moment it all started for me.

Part 1: The moment it all started for me.

You may have heard me tell this story before, but it bears repeating.

Functional Aromatherapy® started the day Mary (name changed for privacy) didn’t show up for her appointment. I didn’t know it at the time, but that missed appointment would change my life.

See, Mary was a regular. At the time, I was working both front and back end management at my husband's integrative medicine practice, and I was told whenever a patient didn’t show up.

When Mary didn’t show up, I had one of the girls call her – she didn’t answer. A week later, she still didn’t answer.

Fast forward to a month later when she walked into the office. She looked terrible.

She proceeded to tell us the story. See, Mary has had ovarian cancer on and off for years. The fact that she has been in remission before is a miracle in itself.

She had gone to her friends house. The friend’s daughter was a rep for a multi-level marketing company. The daughter explained that Frankincense oil was known to cure cancer.

She also told Mary it was okay to drink. The rep never asked what medication she was on. She never gave a dosage. She just sold her the 5 ml of Frankincense oil for 60 dollars and was on her way.

The next day Mary drank it. All 5 milliliters.

She started getting nauseous, lightheaded etc. She wound up in the University Hospital about 1 hour away. It look her a month to recover.

That story was the start. My Functional Aromatherapy® journey.

I started my research. I found a tiny little school that I can’t even remember the name of now. It was a $50.00 course and came with 20 dram bottles and a printed out book stapled in the corner. I read the whole thing in a night. There was enough “science” to pique my curiosity, but I wanted more.

I didn’t tell anyone that I was doing this. My husband was so angry about what happened to his patient and called the whole thing bullshit that doesn’t work and psuedo-science etc. So I wasn't telling him anything at this point…

You know that guilt when you hide something from your mate? Maybe it’s that new pair of shoes? An Amazon package that you sent to work so he wouldn't see it?

Well, I hid that first real class….until I couldn’t anymore. I hated it and it did make me so anxious that I had to study and learn behind closed doors without his knowledge...

You can imagine the stress and anxiety I felt. That's why today I am exploring the Emotional Petal of the Functional Aromatherapy Matrix. Be sure to check out my recipe below!

Next time, I'll share how I made my always-the-skeptic husband into a believer.

Stress and Anxiety Bland : On the Emotional Petal of the FA matrix

When I first began studying aromatherapy, this was my very first diffuser blend. I used Frankincense in honor of Mary, for without her plight, I wouldn't be where I was.

3 drops of Frankincense
2 drops of Sandalwood
1 drop of Benzoin

I put these 6 drops into my diffuser on an almost daily basis. It definitely lowered my anxiety with the schooling and not telling my husband about it.

I knew it wouldn’t be forever, I’d have to tell him sometime. 😫

Juniper and juniper berries were one of the first plants I ever worked with as an herbalist. Juniper essential oil is also a great part of the plant to work with, and I’ve used it in many of my blends.

A lot of people may think of gin when they think of juniper, but the berries from this tree also has a deep-rooted history as far back as the Roman Empire (and probably even further back than that). They are also used in cooking, medicine, and in some cases, flavoring.

#11 Recipe and Ramblings: Perfect Couple Spray

This is a very difficult and personal recipe and rambling for me today. If you have been following the series, you may have seen that I am divorced after 14 years of marriage. When I found this quote, though I love it, it made me wonder if I had a right to use it, given the state of my dissolved marriage.

However, I am adding it to the series because over these adversaries {link previous blog}, I have learned a lot of great things. Now that I am dating someone new, I am consciously unmaking previous mistakes in this new relationship.

Botanical Oracle: Marshmallow, Althaea officinalis
Botanical Oracle: Marshmallow, Althaea officinalis

Marshmallow is an extremely common herb you will find in almost every herbalist pharmacy. The roots, leaves, and flowers of this plant are all used in herbal medicine, and its use goes back for centuries.

At times, it has been used for medicinal purposes, like a stomachache, but has also used for enjoyment in sweet wine and even those fluffy marshmallows we enjoy today – though it is no longer used in your everyday grocery marshmallow. Usually, though, you will find this herb in a tincture or tea for gastritis, digestive disorders, or used as a mild laxative.
