Ylang Ylang Essential Oil and Neuropathy Pain
In May 2022 the Journal of Ethnopharmacology published a study on the essential oil Ylang Ylang otherwise known as Cananga odorata on pain and anxiety related symptoms with people with neuropathic pain.
Neuropathic pain from various issues (cancer related, idiopathic, diabetic, peripheral) affects approximately 7-10 percent of the world's population. Safe and effective treatments are not always available and do not work on many people. This led researchers to try to find more plant based ways to assist with the issues that come with neuropathic pain such as quality of life issues and anxiety and depression related to having the condition.
Linalool and Caryophyllene are two of the chemical constituents that are in a somewhat high percentage in Ylang Ylang Oil. These are two constituents that are well studied for both pain and anxiety.
It seems to make sense then that the study the researchers did with mice showed that the Ylang Ylang oil used in mice reduced neuropathic pain within 28 days. The study also reduced inflammation markers.
Ylang Ylang has been used for many years in the areas of anxiety and hypertension as well. This study, although done on mice, shows that there may be another place for this oil in the therapeutic arena.
Ylang Ylang oil comes from the Cananga odorata tree. It comes in a variety of ways. Ylang Ylang oil has 5 different types of oils it distills: Ylang Ylang Extra, Ylang Ylang 1, Ylang Ylang 2, Ylang Ylang 3 and Ylang Ylang Complete. These are based on how many times the plant is distilled.
Typically this oil is a floral perfume type smell. We have found that many people feel very strangely about this oil. Most people either love the smell of the oil or absolutely despise it.
Either way, this research is great to know that there may be yet another type of therapy to support neuropathy and its associated symptoms.
